Botox & Fillers Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a cosmetic injectable neurotoxin that temporarily paralyzes targeted muscles in the face. By inhibiting some, but not all muscle movements, you can continue to make facial expressions but enjoy smoother skin without common fine lines like crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines resulting in a youthful and rejuvenated expression.

Botox begins to reach full effects roughly 14 days after injection, with results lasting roughly 3 months before additional treatment is needed.

Botox may also be used to treat overactive muscles in the jaw, which you can reduce teeth grinding habits and slim your jawline, and around the neck and chin. The physicians can also treat excessive sweating with injections under the armpits, on the hands, or on the soles of the feet.

What are fillers?

Dermal or “soft tissue” fillers, or fillers, are other cosmetic injectables that some people confuse with Botox. All of them can treat wrinkles but in completely different ways. Instead of inhibiting motor nerve impulses to stop muscle contractions in the face, fillers treat wrinkles by adding and restoring volume to the facial structure.

The team at Medical Dermatology Associates of Chicago uses two different types of fillers to soften facial contours, treat wrinkles, or boost volume:

Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers

Hyaluronic acid is a natural lubricating substance that you can find in your skin, joints, eyes, and other areas throughout the body. The team at Medical Dermatology Associates of Chicago uses HA fillers like Juvéderm® and Restylane®, which can enhance thin lips, fill hollows under the eyes, and plump the cheeks. Their effects typically last 6-12 months.

Poly-l-lactic acid fillers

Poly-l-lactic acid fillers like Sculptra® help to rebuild lost collagen in targeted areas. Collagen is a fibrous protein that gives your skin a firm structure. To restore your lost facial volume, the team recommends getting 2-4 treatment sessions every 6-8 weeks with Sculptra. The results last for up to two years but can vary from person to person.

Am I a good candidate for Botox and fillers?

Botox and fillers are both highly popular treatments for the signs of aging that appear on your face. During a consultation appointment, the team at Medical Dermatology Associates of Chicago will review your skin care goals and medical history to see if you can safely get either or both injection types.
