Kybella Q&A

What is Kybella?

KYBELLA® is a prescription medicine used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin known as submental fat. Deoxycholic acid, also known as cholanoic acid, is the active ingredient in the prescription drug Kybella®.

Kybella® is injected into the problem area and works to permanently destroy stubborn fat cells resulting in a smoother, more contoured profile over time. Treatments take only a few minutes to administer and have little to no downtime.

It takes some time to see the full effect of your Kybella injections after each treatment session because the lymphatic system must flush out the contents of the treatment-damaged fat cells.

How many Kybella treatments do I need?

You’ll need more than one treatment session with Kybella injections to get your ideal results. During your initial consultation with the team at Medical Dermatology Associates of Chicago, your providers examine your chin and take note of your medical history. Then, they can design a treatment plan to help you meet your goals.

A typical treatment plan with Kybella consists of 3-4 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart to give the fat some time to flush out after each session. Each treatment takes just a few minutes, and you can safely go home with little or no downtime right after your appointment.

How should I prepare for Kybella?

Like other cosmetic treatments, you need to be physically healthy to get Kybella safely, and your expectations for the results should be realistic.

At your consultation, the team gives you instructions to follow leading up to your first treatment and each session thereafter. To get the best possible results from Kybella and minimize the potential of complications, you should:

  • Wash your face before each appointment
  • Stop taking acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and other drugs that cause bruising
  • Schedule your appointments at least two weeks in advance of any special events
  • Avoid alcohol and sugary foods for 24-48 hours before and after a session
  • Reschedule your appointment if you develop any infections

If you choose to get other cosmetic dermatology treatments with Kybella, your providers will plan and coordinate your treatments to minimize healing time.
